SHINE Recognizes HS STEM Students, Selects Employee for Illuminator Award

Janesville International Education Program wins annual competition; SHINE CEO honors Daniel Arizaga with prestigious ‘Illuminator Award’

In February, we brought our third annual SHINE Illuminator Award Student 3D Design Competition to a close, selecting the Janesville International Education Program team as the winner. This competition, which began last fall, asked middle and high school students throughout Janesville to design and create a 3D-printed object to be used by SHINE as an employee award of excellence, dubbed the Illuminator Award.

SHINE began the Illuminator Award 3D Design Competition in 2018 to both reward exemplary performance from our employees and involve local students in STEM.

“Inherent to our mission are our commitments both to our core values – SHINE Together, Empowered Accountability, Grit, Responsibility, and Pioneering Spirit – and to enriching and giving back to our communities,” says SHINE Founder and CEO Greg Piefer. “The SHINE Illuminator Award Student Competition demonstrates both commitments, giving local students opportunities to gain experience in STEM and rewarding the dedication of our employees to carrying out SHINE’s mission to better our world.”

The 2021 Illuminator Award Design Competition

This year, four high school teams from Craig High School, Rock University High School, and the Janesville International Education Program submitted designs for the Illuminator Award. The winning design was judged by a panel of SHINE employees on the following criteria: innovation and creativity; presentation; usefulness in an office environment; and of course, SHINE-iness.

The winner of 2021’s design contest was a team of three students from the Janesville International Education Program: Frank Li, Peter Wang, Tobias Hinrichs and their instructor, Jeff Leider. Their Iron Man-inspired design named ‘Holder,’ incorporates a light-up SHINE logo as a flashlight. Other features include a clever mobile phone stand; a tape cutter; business card holder; lamp; and computer mouse cord holder. The contraption’s base, with a design inspired by SHINE’s neutron generator technology, features a drawer capable of holding small office supplies.
