Our mission extends beyond revolutionizing fusion technology- we're also committed to improving health outcomes in our local communities. That's why we were proud to participate again in the American Heart Association’s Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk in Janesville.
On September 15th, our team joined hundreds of community members at the Town Square Pavilion for the 31st annual walk. This year, thanks to the incredible generosity of our employees and vendors, we raised over $8,600 for the American Heart Association. This brings our total contribution since 2017 to more than $80,000 in support of life-saving research and education that directly impacts our community.
Our involvement in the Heart Walk aligns closely with our work in producing diagnostic medical isotopes, including molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), which we will produce at Chrysalis, our Janesville facility. Mo-99 is a critical component in diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures, including those used to detect and diagnose heart disease. By participating in the Heart Walk, we supported both the community we serve and the very patients who may benefit from the diagnostic tools we aim to create.
For many of us at SHINE, this cause is deeply personal. Mason, one of our employees who helped coordinate this year's Heart Walk efforts, shared his story:
"Heart disease has profoundly impacted my life. My dad has survived three heart attacks and undergone just as many open-heart surgeries. When I was 16, I lost my uncle unexpectedly to heart disease. These experiences are deeply unsettling, especially for a kid visiting their dad in the hospital or attending a loved one's funeral far too soon. Unfortunately, I'm not alone in this. Most people have been touched by heart disease or stroke, either personally or through someone they know. That's why this cause is so important to me."
Mason's experience resonates with many of us, underscoring why our participation in events like the Heart Walk is so vital. Heart disease and stroke are the #1 and #5 leading causes of death in the US, respectively. By coming together as a community, we took steps - literally and figuratively - to change those statistics.
Our involvement in the Heart Walk is part of our broader commitment to community engagement. We believe in giving back to the communities that have supported our mission, with a focus on initiatives that promote nuclear and STEAM education, combat heart disease and cancer, and practice environmental stewardship.
The funds raised through the Heart Walk will support critical AHA projects, including:
As we reflect on the walk, we're filled with gratitude - for our employees who contributed so generously, for our community partners who share our vision of a healthier future, and for organizations like the American Heart Association that work tirelessly to save lives.
We're already looking forward to next year's event. Whether you're a seasoned walker or just starting your fitness journey, every step counts in the fight against heart disease. Together, we can continue to pave the way to better heart health for all.
Thank you to everyone who laced up, stepped out, and made a difference for healthier hearts!
